Happy May everyone!

The last week of the semester is finally upon us, and that means it’s time to wrap up a truly phenomenal year here at UF SASE! April was a busy month for all of us, whether that meant being busy with exams, thinking about the approaching finals season, or enjoying the final SASE events of the year. Let’s have one last look back at the memories we made and fun we had during the last month of SASE!

SASE Science Week

Our first full week of April here at SASE had us busy with SASE Science Week, a national SASE event where we have different challenges each week to complete with our chapters. We were able to do a lot of different things during the week such as featuring our members’ exciting research, unveiling the “Science Behind Mochi”, and watching the new “Super Mario Bros. Movie” to learn the physics behind Mario! SASE Science Week also allows us to see all the cool things that other SASE chapters around the country are doing, so this opportunity to participate in the SASE culture is always a treat. Thank you so much to all who were involved in making SASE Science Week a success!

SERC

The SASE Southeast Regional Conference (SERC) took place right after SASE Science Week at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, and many of our members were able to go and take advantage of all the professional opportunities that were available. UF SASE members were able to network with recruiters, attend professional workshops, and participate in the SERC career fair, giving our members lots of experience and guidance on their professional journey. After SERC, our members were able to go to Universal Studios Florida and have a magical time exploring the theme park and making wonderful memories together. Thank you so much to our SERC planners for a wonderful SERC weekend, as well as to SASE UCF for making SERC such a great experience for all!

Executive Board Elections

Elections for the 2023-2024 UF SASE Executive Board took place after SERC, and our new executive board was elected as follows:

President: Emely Chhu

Internal Vice President: Sharika Khondaker

External Vice President: Max Huang

Treasurer: Ian Kreger

Secretary: Daniel Park

Public Relations Officer: Francesca Chalfoun

New SASE E-Board (Daniel, Ian, Francesca, Sharika, Emely, and Max)

Congratulations to our new executive board! We wish you all the best and are beyond excited to see what the upcoming year holds with you as our leadership!

Fireside Chat with Wabtec

Our last corporate event of the year was the Virtual Fireside Chat with Wabtec, where our members were able to learn more about having a professional career in industry by speaking directly with Wabtec engineers. Wabtec is a company with a proven track record of creating and maintaining a productive and reliable transportation ecosystem, and the knowledge that their engineers provided our members is extremely valuable in aiding our members on their professional journey. Thank you so much to our EVP, Taise, for organizing this event!

Evening with Professors

Our biannual Evening with Professors event is a keystone of UF SASE, and our members were able to talk to a number of beloved engineering professors and learn about careers in academia, research, and overall life lessons that the professors have learned and experienced over the course of their careers. This event is a great way for our members to understand and appreciate the wisdom that our educators hold as well as to get closer to our professors. We definitely will keep this event going, so even if you missed out on this one, be on the lookout this upcoming Fall for the next Evening with Professors. Thank you so much to our Advancement Chair, Brian, for organizing this enriching event for our members!

SASE Intern Events

Throughout this semester, our very own SASE Interns have been working extremely hard and learning the trade of event planning, and April was the chance for the Interns to finally showcase what they’ve been working on. SASE Brains, our mentor-mentee event, the SASE Mochi Fundraiser, the SASE Esports Tournament/Social, the St. Francis House Service Event, and SASE Game were all Interns-hosted events that took place this past month. They were extremely fun and successful, and many of our members loved the ideas and the activities that the Interns were able to come up with.

Through this experience, our Interns were able to explore their own event planning interests and build their skills to host the types of events that they wanted to, and now they are well-equipped to lead other planning initiatives. Thank you so much to our Interns for your hard work in planning these events over the semester, and a huge thank you to our MICs, Amrith and Emely, for guiding our Interns to make sure that this year of SASE Interns was a success!

Spring Banquet

Last but not least, we held our Spring Banquet to celebrate what a great year we’ve had! The venue was wonderful, the events were fun, but more than anything, it was extremely special to see everyone’s beautiful faces at the banquet and be able to enjoy our last event of the school year together. The spring banquet is always an event to remember, and although it can be bittersweet to say goodbye to the school year and to those that are leaving us (we love you seniors!), that only makes the event all the more meaningful. Thank you so much to our IVP, Julia, as well as to all of those on our Banquet Committees for making this event truly a night to remember!

Conclusion

And with that, we’ve come to the end of the year! It really is amazing to look back and see all that we’ve been able to accomplish this year. From professional development, to fostering relationships through our mentor-mentee program, to feeling the triumphant successes and brutal failures of intramural sports, this year showed us how multifaceted SASE can be. It truly was a great year, and I hope you can be proud to say that you are a part of the SASE family! This will be the last time you’ll hear from me on the blog, and I’m so happy that I can say that I wholeheartedly enjoyed this year with all of you.

As finals approach and the semester comes to its end, I truly wish you all the best of luck in all facets of life and am looking forward to what the future brings for all of us. You, our members, allow SASE to be the great organization that we are, and we could not do any of this without you. Thank you so much for this year, and here’s to many more late nights in Nye to be had and memories to be made!
